Book Sort with Reach Out and Read

Serve KC will assist Reach Out and Read to unbox, sort and rebox donated books.  Sorting may include placing a colored sticker on the spine of the book which designates reading age level and reboxing according to sticker color.

Attire:  Please dress comfortably for moving boxes.  The sort will take place in a conference room which may be warm.

Children need to be at least 5 years old and actively involved in helping.

Water will be provided for volunteers.

Location:  The sort is at the Kansas City Star Pavilion at 1601 McGee—it’s the large bldg. with lots of greenish glass—takes up 2 city blocks (17th/McGee/15th/Oak).  The door is in the middle of the block and the room we work in is in the corner of the building (you can see in the window if you look to your left when you are at the door.  The door will be locked, but you will see the Hooked on Books sign in the window and a Serve KC volunteer will be waiting at the door to let people in.  If you are late to the event and no-one is at the door, tap on the window and someone will let you in.

Parking:  There is plenty of street parking in that area.  We are unsure if the Star’s parking lots are free or accessible for the group to park in.

Reach Out and Read Kansas City is a nonprofit program in partnership with the Kansas University Endowment at the University of Kansas Medical Center and a member of the national Reach Out and Read Program.

Each year, Reach Out and Read Kansas City provides approximately 76,500 new, culturally and developmentally appropriate books to almost 30,000 low income children, birth to age 5, during well-child visits at our partner clinic sites, building a 15-book library for each child before he or she enters kindergarten.
